Sospel May 2021

Sospel is a stunning area of Southern France, where we looked after three young dogs and three cats, we enjoyed the surrounding scenery enormously. The house and pet owner Lorraine had rescued the three cuddly dogs. The two puppies were actually found in a rubbish bin in Sicily, which is so sad and the Alsatian was rescued in a field nearby a few months before we sat. There were also three beautiful affectionate cats. In May 2021 the two boisterous rescue dogs, Fletch and Teddy were only eight-month-old puppies, and due to Covid they had not as yet been socialised so if they saw other dogs they got very excited and pulled on the leads quite a lot. The Alsatian, Meadow is a beautiful and strong rescue dog who likes to be scratched and brushed daily. The three cats were easy to care for and liked a cuddle and of course, brushing each day.  All three dogs were stong and with the long hilly walks nearby we were kept very fit, and as we could not leave the dogs for more than a few hours we stayed on the property playing with the animals, but we did get to see a bit of the surrounding countryside which was fun.

Happy Hamish – Sept 2020

Little Hamish is a very happy cockerpoo full of bouncy energy and he needs a couple of walks a day. He loves to bark at the horses in the field at the end of the garden and runs around the garden playing by himself happily. In the evenings he likes nothing more than to sleep with his soft curly head on your knee on the setee on his blanket whilst watching TV. He’s very affectionate and loving to humans and most other dogs, although there are some exceptions. A well-behaved fellow we took him to National Trust properties, to the pub with friends, to Cambridge and lots of villages nearby, everywhere we went he made friends easily. We enjoyed looking after him thoroughly and he cheered up our days. In a difficult year with restrictions, it was fun to get back to our regular dog sitting once again.

Morrissey & Blu – Sept 2020

Morrissey and Blu are an interesting pair of blu coloured pets their colouring almost matches exactly. Morrissey is a British shorthair blue cat, about seven years old who’s used to having his own way and Blu is a French bulldog puppy of around ten months old. Blu likes nothing better than to box with Morrissey in the mornings in the garden and although Morrissey appears not to enjoy this activity he always comes back for more! They both love to sit in the lounge and look out of the windows or occasionally to sit on your knee although neither of them is particularly keen on being lap animals, both being far too independent for that! Blu loves his daily walks in the nearby fields and meeting other dogs to run and play chase with, but if it’s raining or he gets tired beware as he’ll just sit down and refuse to move an inch! Blu also enjoys meeting other animals and is quite inquisitive, we went past some horses and he insisted on saying hello! Morrissey loves to pat your hand when you’re on the computer or look over your shoulder in disgust at what is on the screen! Being a cat Morrissey is also keen to become liquid and fit into a little box if you happen to leave one about! They both love their food and Blu will happily woof down anything Morrissey cares not to eat or drink! These two pets are great fun and a pleasure to look after, their home is very comfortable and it’s a lovely area to visit too, we’d have no hesitation to look after them once again. Thanks Victoria and Darren.

SLEEPLESS NIGHTS WORRYING ABOUT YOUR PETS WHEN PLANNING HOLIDAYS?

Do you have sleepless nights worrying about what you’re going to do with your pets when you go away on holiday or simply for a long weekend?

If you do, have you considered getting a house-sitter? And if you’ve thought of this option how do you go about it? Some people may have told you horror stories of kennels that stressed their pets out or even tales of neighbours unfilled promises or drop in day pet sitters that didn’t work out at all. The things you need to consider when going away is what will work for you and your beloved pet? A house-sitter may be just what ‘the doctor ordered’.

WHY WE STARTED HOUSE & PET SITTING

When my Dad got ill and had to have a prolonged stay in Dudwell St Mary’s nursing home in Etchingham, my husband and I used to spend hours driving to and from Farnham to see him. Sometimes we would book accommodation which soon became very expensive over the months.

In 2012, we started looking after dogs at our own home in Farnham via barkingmad.com. In September 2018, we decided to go from looking after dogs in our own home, to pet sitting in other peoples homes. We were hoping for house-sitting opportunities in East Sussex and surrounds, and we have so far been lucky to get these quite often. We’ve stayed in Tunbridge Wells, Heathfield and other lovely places which has enabled us to see dad quite a lot which is great.

We started off fairly local, and enjoyed it thoroughly, both the opportunity to look after someone else’s pets and trying out their home and surrounds. Even though it wasn’t far from our home it still felt completely different and the walks and dog were superb. So we jumped right in and we now do this quite a number of months a year, just so long as we can continue to work from their homes. We don’t charge and this service, which is fairly normal, although I friends think we’re mad, as the idea is one of collaboration, we get your home and you get our services looking after your pets and home.

SO WHAT DO YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN GETTING A FREE PET SITTER?

Do the people you are talking to about house and pet sitting have the following qualities:

ARE THEY PET LOVERS?

  • Do the people you’re considering for the job have previous experience of looking after animals, both domestic pets and farm animals – if this is required and do they naturally love animals of all kinds?

  • Will they know what to do in an emergency? We have both trained in dog first aid which is very useful knowledge to have Are they local or are they travelling from far away – could they get delayed and can you deal with this?

• It’s a well known fact that the most popular sitters love animals and may have previously had pets of their own, a lot of pet sitters use the opportunity to travel the world seeing places whilst getting free accommodation

ARE THEY TRUST WORTHY AND WILLING TO COLLABORATE WITH YOU?

  • Is the prospective house-sitter happy to chat to you on Skype or WhatsApp so you can see what they are like? And visa versa.

  • Do they have references on the website your looking at – trustedhousesitters.com

offers the opportunity to review the sitters as well as the home owners, so it’s a two way street

  • Are they able to be flexible with their plans to help you to care for your pets and your beloved home?

  • Are they willing to water the garden or collect the post and deal with emergencies

  • We usually suggest that we arrive the day prior to the owner leaving, this is for the animals to get used to us before the owners leave and we also often stay a day later in case of delayed flights too, which has in fact happened to us previously

DO THEY LOVE EXPLORING NEW AREAS?

• Will the pet sitter enjoy discovering your area, and if so are you able to give them local maps and pointers to the best pubs and restaurants in the local area? So that the house-sitter can live-like-a-local

WORKING INDEPENDENTLY
• Do your pet-sitters need wi-fi to be able to work and if so is yours high-speed?

AND WHAT DOES A PROSPECTIVE PET SITTER WANT FROM US?
• All a pet sitter usually asks for is – a clean home and dog, clean and comfortable bed, a pet inventory to tell you about the pets and home, some foods to start them off and some information about the area around the home and walks if it’s dogs they are taking care of.

WHERE WILL YOU FIND A HOUSE AND PET SITTER?
Look at trustedhousesitters.com or nomador.com to get your sitters, we personally are registered with both and also have our own website WoofWoofAway.com, there are other websites too, but as we haven’t tried them we are unable to recommend them to you. Wish you luck with your travels and pet sitters.

Boxing Day in Tunbridge Wells with Dougie

Little cockerpoo Dougie is just one year old and very much still a puppy. He needs cuddles, affection, play, toys and to run run run! He’d like constant attention and doesn’t need to rest much at all. If he gets two walks a day as well as visits to shops, pubs, nursing homes and rides in the car he’s a happy chappy. Luckily as we work from home we can provide the care little Dougie desires. His owners too work from home a great deal and he has a little human brother to keep him occupied. We love this little dog and are happy to visit care for him and housesit any time we’re asked.

The Three Musketeers – the inseparables Harley, Lola and Max

Harlequin, Lola and Max are inseparable just like the three musketeers. Harley a rescue came first, a beautiful white cat with pale blue eyes, then Lola the Rotweiller followed and lastly Max the Malinois. Rottweilers are strong dogs and Lola is no exception but she’ s been well trained and follows your instructions, apart from a bit of pulling at the beginning of the walk! Max at only one-year-old is still a teenager with the need to be stimulated continuously. throw me a ball, let me jump, come play with me! We thoroughly enjoyed looking after these three characters and felt fitter when we left!

Wriggly one and her big brother

We were lucky enough to look after little 8-month-old puppy spaniel Ebony and her big brother Finchley recently. This little puppy wriggles all the time, with excitement, exuberance and just the general love of life, and everyone in it and it is a joy to behold.

When out walking everyone stops to stroke little Ebony and then her bigger brother large labrador ever-patient Finchley gets a stoke too. Ebony does, however, try out his patience by stealing his treats, sticks, balls and his large and comfy big dog bed when she can! But Finchley ever the gentleman and a very gentle giant labrador too, rarely shows any displeasure what-so-ever.

We’ve taken them to the forests, fields, seaside and local towns of the New Forest and they’ve been very well behaved, always coming back when called with three blasts of the whistle, two short and one long. Of course, it helps to have a doggy treat to hand when they come back so quickly and willingly!!

In the evenings we’ve relaxed in the lounge and they are happy to sit near you for a tummy tickle and of course, a wriggle, wriggle, wriggle, for little Ebony.

What’s in a bark? Can you speak Canine?

Does your dog bark? If so how much and for how long? Do you know what it means? Lot’s of owners say they know what their dog is saying to them and to everyone else too! If only this were true.

Many experts state they know what dogs are saying and that the type of barks and sounds they use have certain meanings for example:

– Low pitched growl usually indicates “Stay away from me!”

– High pitched yelps and high barking sounds often indicate the opposite – “Come closer and play”!
– One or two short sharp barks are usually a form of greeting to say “Why hello there, where were you?“
– Occasional barks suggest mild interest in what is happening around, calling the pack to look into the problem “Look at this“.
– Frequent barks, in a string of two to four rapid barks might indicate – “Take note, there is an intruder here! Get ready to defend the pack.“
– Long strings of incessant barking with some whining usually means “I’m very lonely, please can someone come and keep me company.”
If you want to know more about this subject so you can talk to your dog better then try reading – ‘How to Speak Dog: Mastering the Art of Dog-Human Communication’ by Stanley Coren PhD, Rudy Sanda, et al.

Ruby and Lola – Lewes over firework week!

What’s in a bark? What does it mean? If only we knew, some barks humans know instinctively and naturally act on, I’m hungry, I want to play! If we did know all of the barks, we’d have known exactly what Ruby and Lola were trying to tell us during firework week in Lewes, although I think we had a pretty good idea none the less.

An unknown fact to us was that Lewes is the capital of fireworks in the UK, and this became very evident during the week that we looked after these two beautiful dogs. Fireworks would go off in the middle of the afternoon, at all times of night up to 2 am and then again at 6 am!! Who knew people would let fireworks off at these random times?

Both Ruby and Lola are petrified of fireworks which meant we had to sleep on the settee next to them all night to keep them calm. Petsafe says that a series of yelps says: “I’m hurting!” “I’m really scared”, this is in response to severe fear and pain and this was the response of Ruby the spaniel, and Lola the labrador to fireworks. So anyone that says dogs don’t mind fireworks is very very wrong!

But apart from this couple of noisy bang filled evenings, which was not the dogs’ fault, looking after these two wonderful dogs was a pleasure. We went on some lovely walks on the Sussex hills and we also took the dogs to see my elderly Dad which he and they thoroughly enjoyed.

These two dogs are great friends and play beautifully together most of the time, except where balls are involved, as spaniel Ruby thinks they all belong to her! We’d happily look after these two dogs again any time.

Philippe and Gertie and the walking ropes!

We recently had the joy of looking after two german miniature schnauzer terriers in the South of France. These two intelligent dogs are excellent guard dogs letting you know as soon as there is someone anywhere near the house! They like to sit and look out down the driveway to ensure that no one comes into the grounds at all. They don’t bark unless someone is there so that’s a great way of knowing if someone is in the grounds around the house.

Philippe is quite a strong-willed little dog and likes to let you know that he’d like his walk at exactly four-thirty, he will bark at this time to ensure you know it’s now walk time! And he then likes to have his supper directly after his walk followed by rough and tumble play with Gertie. Then time for a cuddle with the humans in front of the TV, and a scratch around the ears and under the chin off course.

Gentle little Gertie can be quite timid and one needs to ensure that she gets to eat her food and Philippe doesn’t steal it! Both dogs love their walks, so after discovering that their leads were nowhere to be found we made two walking ropes from our car tow ropes! The dogs didn’t seem to mind in the slightest and were tired out afterwards, probably due to the extra weight of the tow ropes and the lovely long walks through the beautiful vines and countryside surrounding the house. Although it’s a quiet area there are still cars around so we needed to walk them on leads or ropes in this case!

We thoroughly enjoyed looking after these two beautiful, gentle little dogs in their wonderful home near Draguignan in Provence for the long weekend, our only complaint is that it was too short! We would happily look after them again at any time.
